Seal Carcass for Jesus

One of my favorite Ja stories goes way way back to when we were freshman in high school and very religious. Praise Jesus.

We went to Mexico (Tijuana maybe? I don't know, we were only 14) on a mission with the rest of our church youth group. We learned some absurd skits about God to preform for Mexican migrant workers. Obviously this was some of the finest work done by missionaries ever.

Poor Jamie and I were all by ourselves in a different bunk room from the rest of our group with a bunch of religious wackos. After a few days we needed an outlet and something more entertaining than pure worship. We decided it would be a great idea to pull a prank on the boys that were in our group. And what could be better than collecting a maggot covered dead baby seal from the syringe strewed beach nearby to put in the boys' shower. Naturally we were elated with our plan. After collecting the carcass we needed to store it under our bunk bed in a garbage bag until the perfect opportunity arose for us to strike. Well after a few days we were found out before we could even act. Probably one of the wackos ratted us out. The director of the program had to get involved, I guess. They weren't really mad at us, just shocked. I remember them saying they had never 'dealt with a church like ours before.' Who knows, maybe they are still telling this story too about too exuberant, but troubled, youths from Seattle.

Growing up with Jamie, or Jaime, or Ja, or Ja-Face, or Himay, or Jizzum, or James.

Jamie! I didn’t really meet Jamie until 7th or 8th grade (I don’t know when…I have a terrible memory for dates) when her and her family moved in across the street from me. It was the coolest, I mean, your best friend, across the street, what?! We could just walk out the door and shout to say hello. Jamie and I share a lot of firsts together, here are a few:

  • The first time I got drunk (sorry mom and dad, it happened and I think I was 16…again, not sure on the age). We were at her parents “cabin” in Kingston…I remember spilling Coors Light on the floor and then licking it up, gross.
  • The first time we froze someones underwear. We had a sleepover in Jamie’s basement…Megan, I am sorry. In hindsight, that was really mean!
  • Driving a stick. Jamie taught me all I know! The Friction-Point, I think about it every day. And if you think about letting someone who can’t drive a stick, drive you home from school…wow Jamie, you kick-ass, or you have huge balls, I am still deciding.
  • Power-Smiles (see image example) — we ruined a lot of photos with those :)))))))
  • Looking good in swim caps. That’s right, we made it happen, we worked those caps and sexy-speedos. Who knew being on the swim team could be cool?
  • Challenges. Jamie LOVES challenges. I can’t even remember the bet now, but I lost and had to eat sardines and cooked egg yolks, two things I despise! I think mustard may have been involved too…good work Ja.
  • This isn’t a first for Jamie and I as a team, but it did make me pee my pants. Jamie’s car, The Waffe Mobile (don’t ask), was CONSTANTLY loosing it’s muffler. You would think it was because it was old, but really it’s because Jamie drove that Civic like it was an off-road vehicle (not really, just being dramatic for effect). One day Jamie was driving home and there was a branch in the road. She tells the story that the branch was a “twig” and she figured it would be okay to drive over…well the branch was a branch and she drove all the way home with it stuck under the good ol’ Muff. In Jamie’s defense there were twigs involved, they were just he smaller branches coming off of the giant branch she ran over.
There are a lot more of these stories, but I don’t want to hi-jack this bog. I love you Jamie, looking forward to doing more fun and stupid things with you!www.PoorDescisions.com, let’s make it happen.

Friendship Without Fear

You see the robe was a $40 value.

As industrious as she is fashionable this tale of Jamie took place in April of 2010 on the west side of Los Angeles. Richard Randolph Geiger the Third was leaving to make a movie and going away festivities were in order. Jamie - never one I welch on a bet -  owed Rand and Dave the Duke Warburton a dinner at the effortlessly named bastion of surf AND turf known simply as Sizzler. Myself and Sona Ram (not yet bearing the name or ring of the Geiger clan) joined in what could only be described as a reasonably priced yet barely edible meal. But Rand and the Duke were quite giddy by the experience and the night was far from over. A seemingly innocuous stop at CVS followed. Jamie was lacking a jacket but found a more than suitable replacement. It was a robe of the finest polyester and was a hue that reminded people what the color pink was supposed to look like in its purest form. Stylish and warm it exemplified what Henri Labrouste and Louis Sullivan had pontificated over a century before - form truly follows function. So with new garment in hand the five compatriots ventured to the lands end, Dockweiler Beach, to sit peacefully at the waters edge lit by the stars and warmed by a fire made by their own hands. The revelry would appear to be short lived as it was quickly discovered that polyester is in fact highly flammable and should not be worn in front of a large bon fire while smoking a cigar. Every spark and ash was a potentially life ending ember floating gingerly toward her and the robe. Undaunted by the danger to herself Jamie championed on despite several instances of holes burning into the robe threatening to immerse her in flames at any moment. The night of stories, laughs and farewells came careening towards an end much like a wave descending back to the ocean. The lasting memory from the night was definitely of Jamie Anderson, a person who would literally risk being engulfed in flames for a night with her friends. Could she use better judgment, that is not for me to say but a better friend could not be found. And that robe that exemplifies Jamie - her brazen disregard for her own safety and her commitment to her friends - hangs proudly in her closet today.

Back to the Future: Ithaca College Edition

My favorite Jamie story is an exciting one.  Jamie and I had our final film class together during our senior year at Ithaca College, and were randomly paired together as partners to complete the big end-of-semester presentation.

Because the only thing we really cared about at the time was the future success of our rock band, Jamie and I procrastinated and saved our project until the very last minute.  Only in the final few days did we learn that a failing grade might actually prevent us from graduating on time.  Needless to say, we were in danger of flunking most heinously .  An additional semester of college was looming for Jamie, but if I didn't graduate my father was threatening to send me to military school.  We were doomed.

Just when it seemed like all was lost, our advisor Professor Rufus approached us with a solution.  This began what Jamie and I now refer to as our most excellent adventure.  With some help from Professor Rufus, Jamie and I travelled back in time, collected history's best filmmakers into our phone booth, and used their knowledge to ace our final presentation.  I know this story sounds like something you might see in a farfetched 80s movie or something, but Jamie can vouch for the validity of it.  We nailed our presentation, graduated college, saved the future, and began a most excellent friendship.  Jamie is amazing, and definitely the best time traveling companion a person could ask for.  Happy 30th Jamie!!

Dawn to Dusk - 3TL

Finding inspiration and strength from the early 2000s girl group, 3LW (aka: 3 Little Women), 3TL (aka: 3 Tough Ladies) was born in the Spring of 2012.  I can't speak for the rest of the girls but I can personally say this was and is one of the hardest physical and mental challenges I've ever put myself through.  The Dawn to Dusk Adventure race is also, easily, one of the best races I've ever completed. When Jamie invited me to compete in this race, I had no idea what I was getting into.  I'm very thankful she pushed us all to do this and that I got to experience this bitch of a race with her.

"Dawn to Dusk" is a 12-hour adventure race typically held in San Luis Obispo, CA.  It's a self-guided race, by that I mean that we were not designated to any specific trails/routes.  With simply a map and a compass, we were challenged to race to various check points throughout San Luis Obispo.  No cellphones or gps devices permissible.  Failing to make the check points was not only a forfeit or time penalty, it was our only access to fresh food and clean water.  Away from said check points we were completely dependent on the camelbacks and power bars on our backs.

I found an email from Jamie detailing our journey:

Kayak Total (includes pulling the kayak through the stream) - 6.6 miles
Run Total (includes carrying the kayak) - 16.8 miles
Bike Total (includes nothing related to the kayak) - 20.1 miles

Grand total: 43.5 miles

This adventure didn't come without struggle.  There were cuts, spills, wipeouts, lots of sweat, and too many bruises to count.  Megan had basically broken her ankle a month or so before the race.  I had to abandon a broken bike after flying over the handlebars.  We almost gave up in a delirious and misguided 10 mile run through rolling hills, and still, we kept running.  Through it all, we were the first all-female finishing team.

Of all the adventures and challenges I've tested myself against, this will forever be a favorite of mine. For that, a huge thanks goes to Jamie for pushing us all to not only sign up, but to crush the race.

Bleed black and pink. 3TL

Seattle Seahawk Sunday

The 2013 Seattle Seahawks are currently 12-3, 1st in the NFC Western Division. The Seahawks will be taking on the St. Louis Rams at CenturyLink Field at home today.

The 2013 Seattle Seahawks season is the franchise's 38th season in the National Football League, and the fourth under head coach Pete Carroll. For the first time in franchise history, the Seahawks have recorded double digit victories in consecutive seasons. Currently, their 12 victories compiled through week 16 is the second best start in franchise history, only surpassed by the 13–2 mark achieved during their 2005 NFC Championship season.

Hoping Jamie and the Seahawks take home another W today.

They Might be Pants

"They Might be Pants" took 2012 by storm. The idea was born on Martini's birthday, where we decided it was best to trade in our actual pants for something a bit more shiny... and ended with an obstacle course race a few months later where I steamrolled Jamie on a water slide. Despite the fact that Kate ended up stuck in a hospital room with a gorilla, her pants completed the race (thanks, Sona!) and a legend was born.

P.S. - Fun fact: I bought Jamie's leotard. She put it on for the first time the morning of the race.

The Hill and The Tripod

I was hoping Tony and I would find the time to split a handle of vodka and create a handwritten list of all our favorite Tripod moments.  Sadly, we're borderline adults and haven't had the time.  There's always the New Year...

Until then, here's my best, somewhat sober, recollection of the birth of the tripod.

It was football season, that I know for sure.  A particularly beautiful day in September.  The exact weekend, the games, the wins, and entirely what was drank that morning, I cannot recall.  I'm sure the Jets and the Seahawks were involved.  I'm positive spiked coffee's, bloody mary's, mimosas, breakfast chicken wings, and no water were consumed.

This is a throwback to our Melrose Place days.  I seem to remember getting a ride down the hill to everyone's favorite early morning bar, Prince 'o' Whales.  The lack of a car and mass consumptions of alcohol will all come full circle later.

It was just the three of us. Jamie, Tony, and myself.  It was a Sunday morning and all throughout Playa, not a sole was aware of the self-destruction we had committed to engaging in.  Money was of no concern, as I seem to recall three near $100+ bartabs before Noon had struck.  As the alcohol built a cuddle puddle in our stomachs and our livers, we realized that it was time to head back up The Hill.  Not to wash up and rest off the intoxication to ensure a hangover free Monday, but to drink more,  and cheaply.

In order to get up said Hill, we'd have to work together, using each other for support and balance.  Three sheets to the wind and trying to stand, it was clear only a tripod formation could save us.  The Tripod carries a much more imaginative and weighted meaning now, but at that moment, the Tripod was real and necessary.

Being the youngest and least familiar with Playa, I was allowed to navigate the group back home via my secret route.  I pitched the route as a means to avoid the Hill.  In my less formative years I've come to realized this was quite possibly the steepest, longest, and most difficult route we could have possibly taken.  It's taken me sometime to admit that but I'm here to tell you now, that was a terrible route to take.  However, I have zero regrets of this misguided trip.  It was a lovely and romantic day in Playa.  We passed this precious bikers, taking in a nautical view, near the top of that very long hill.

Eventually, though only slightly less intoxicated, we arrived back at 8644 where I can only assume we napped, we cuddled, and we drank.  As the Tripod is want to do.  The Tripod consists of two friends that I could not have successfully made a home in Playa and Los Angeles without.  I'm incredibly grateful and teary eyed just thinking about how much I love Jamie and Tony and our bond.

Writers note: Jamie and Tony, when you read this, please, add notes, comment, and amend everything I've forgotten.

Jamie's Dates

As many of you know, every year, Jamie had the most dates for Black Tie Day Friday.  As the years have gone by, Black Tie Day Friday is one of my favorite traditions.  It always works out that Jamie brings the most dates though.  Like, what is she trying to prove? This year I even brought extra dates incase Tony didn't want to be my date.  She still beat me.  Ugh I shouldn't vent, truth is, we all just want to be Jamie's date.  That's right, this girl, I'm talking about you Anderson.

The Deeper Side of Jamie

This was Jamie's selection for our recent book club. I'd like to personally commend her for picking a intellectual and important read.  Her selection is not only reflective of Jamie's compassionate side, but a testament to how well rounded Jamie Anderson really is.  Yes, we all have drunken stories of a messy and fun loving Jamie, but we've all had to depend on her at some point as well.  So cheers to all those moments of responsibility.  With that, I'll leave you too your respective Sunday Funday activities.

The Tale of Jamie and the Sweat Tank

Part 5 of 5 from the Duke's Opus:

The race came and went, as all races do.  Jamie ran the crap out of it, to a certain extent, and she was positive her sweat tank and shorts were the envy of all the other runners. She was correct...to a certain extent.  But as the number of days since the race grew more and more, Jamie still found a strange bond with her sweat tank.  It wasn't so much that it was comfortable, because it most certainly was that, nor was it the fact that the lack of sleeves allowed her to admire her guns in the mirror, though she did do that as well.  It wasn't even the fact that the sweat tank talked and Jamie and it traveled around the country solving mysteries.  No, not even that.  It more than that really....or maybe it was just that it was really, really comfortable.

Friday the 13th!

In honor of Friday the 13th, here are 13 things Jamie loves...

America... fuck yeah!

Big Buck Hunter
Even if that means going to Moe's

Building things

Cooking birds, sorry buddy.

Grey V-Neck T-shirts (especially while drinking vodka)

Hot Toddies

Did I mention vodka already? I guess that's not something she likes as much as it is something she needs to survive.  So this picture should serve as a showcase for Jamie's love of Ithaca.  Ok and vodka.

Red vines... I freaking wish this was a picture of Jamie because I'm sure something like this has happened to her.  Possibly mid-haircut.

Seattle... you thought this was going to be a tattoo post, didn't you?

Ok, ok, she does love tattoos...

and Roller Derby.

When she's not rolling or drinking... she's probably training for her next triathlon.
You guys, we have a triathlon friend. It's pretty badass.

After a hard fought triathlon, Jamie loves to snuggle up in her bunny onezie.

So what are 13 things you love about Jamie?

The Tale of Jamie and the Sweat Tank

Part 4 of 5 from the Duke's Opus:

The night before the race Jamie was filled with anticipation.  "I'm filled with anticipation!" she proclaimed to Duke when he arrived at The Lady Lair.  The narration was spot on.
"Don't worry, Jamie" said Duke.  "I brought our sweat suits with us and I'm sure cutting the sleeves and legs off of them will help ease your troubles".
Jamie was unsure as she help up her "Child's Large" size sweat shirt.  "They didn't have a 'small'" Duke said "so I figured this would be close".
"I suppose we'll find out", Jamie replied while reaching for the scissors. "Let's cut the shit outta these".
With a hand as steady as a mighty oak tree in a hurricane Jamie cut and slashed her pants and shirt with swift strokes of surgeon-like accuracy.  After working for what felt like hours to her, but in reality was only 45 seconds, she held her completed work high as a single bead of sweat rolled down her brow.  "I've created my masterpiece!" Jamie proclaimed.  Duke could only nod his head in agreement.
A short time later his clothes were complete as well.  "I really wish I hadn't cut the cut-offs so short" Duke said regretfully.  "Calling these 'shorts' seems like an insult to actual shorts".
"Stop being a baby" Jamie said.  "If you didn't want to wear cut-offs you shouldn't have suggested that we wear cut-offs."
"Fair enough" replied Duke sullenly.  "I suppose we should try these on".
"Way ahead of you!" Jamie responded as she had some how already changed into her sweat suit. "And let me tell you, I have never felt more comfortable in my entire life".
"That does look pretty comfortable" Duke said.
"Oh it is!"  said Jamie.  I feel bad for everyone not wearing a sweat tank right now.  Now go put on your tiny shorts!"
Duke left the room to change and left Jamie with her thoughts.  Her sweat tank was incredibly comfortable.  She couldn't believe it!  Just wearing it made her feel like she was rolling around in a cloud while being serenaded by a choir of fluffy angels.
Duke returned to the room to find Jamie rolling around on the floor humming to herself.  "It's comfortable, but I don't know if it's THAT comfortable" Duke said.
"No, it is" replied Jamie while she continued to roll on the ground.  "I love you sweat tank".
"I love you too" the sweat tank replied.....

The Tale of Jamie and the Sweat Tank

Part 3 of 5 from the Duke's Opus:

The day before the race, Jamie received a GChat from Duke.

Duke: So our sweat suits wound up being $17
  not too bad
 Jamie: not at all
so the ticket for the nutcracker was $33

11:13 AM Jamie: so....if you want to write me a check for $16 it would be much appreciated.Duke: I shall write you a check now and bring it to you tonight

Jamie: you should fax it to me. I can deposit checks via picture on my phone. I wonder if it would accept a faxed check....
 Duke: we shall find out.
Jamie: you will have to fax both the front and the back.
11:15 AM this will be awesome if it works
Duke: ok. it will come in two separate faxes
 Jamie: right
me: be ready in 5 minutes for some fax action!

8 minutes of fax action later
11:23 AM Jamie: not gonna work
it came through super dark and illegible
 Duke: damn
11:24 AM I'll cancel sending side two
I blame this on my super old fax machine
11:25 AM Jamie: that would be pretty awesome if it had worked. Use a combination of a really old technology and a really new one to deposit a check. The past would have met the future. I'm sad now
I think they would have liked each other had they gotten the opportunity
11:26 AM Duke: yeah
I feel the check itself is the bridge between both the past and the future
11:27 AM checks were around when faxes were the rage
and while they are used far less now, they are still around when you can deposit them by sending a picture to your bank with your phone
  it could have been poetic.
It COULD have been poetic.  But somehow Jamie was going to need to pick up the shattered pieces of that dream lost and focus on the race.

The Tale of Jamie and the Sweat Tank

Part 2 of 5 from the Duke's Opus:

As the day of the race drew closer Jamie realized that she had yet to decide what stunning outfit she would wear for the race.  After all, looking your best is important while running, and Jamie always wanted to look her best.  Especially while running the crap out of the race.  So she decided to ask her friend Duke what they should wear.  "Duke", said Jamie, "what do you think we should wear for the race?"
"It's going to be pretty chilly, so we should probably wear something that's warm", responded Duke.
"That's a good idea." Jamie replied.  "But I also don't want to over heat, nor do I want to be confined by conventional pants.  If my training has taught me anything, which it most certainly has, it's that I'll need to wear something that will keep me warm and also adapt to my peak physical prowess".
"Well" said Duke, "I think we should probably buy matching sweat suits and cut off of the arms to make them sleeveless and the legs to make them cut-offs, thus forming the ultimate attire for elite athletic competition"
"That's the greatest idea I've even heard in my entire life" responded Jamie breathlessly.  And it was.  She quite literally had never heard a better idea than that.

The Tale of Jamie and the Sweat Tank

Part 1 of 5 from the Duke's Opus:

"I'm gonna run the crap out of this race", Jamie thought following a particularly hard training session of eating cereal and coming up with reasons not to run that morning.  Jamie and her friend Duke had signed up to run "The Santa Monica Christmas Classic" that year, a race that runs from Venice to Santa Monica in December.  "I trained a whole bunch earlier this year" Jamie thought while taking a spoonful of cereal, "I'm still in peak physical condition".  Munch, munch, munch.  "This will be a cake walk".  SLUUURRRP.  "Ah!" Jamie said out loud as she finished the milk from her cereal bowl.  "Captain Crunch, you're the best personal trainer there is." she waited a split second for the cartoon captain on the cereal box to answer her...he didn't.  "He never does", thought Jamie.

Day 3 of 30

Monday, December 2, 2013

One of my favorite and happiest moments is the 'Jamie Dance' - anyone who got drunk with Jamie around 2009-2011 will recall.

To perform it, one alternately thrusts their left and right hands into the air, pointing at the sky, and rocking side to side slightly.

I still think of it sometimes when I see her, and it always brings a smile to my face.

They should still build that train set...

Back in the Fall of 2008, Jamie, Shotty, 95, and I all took a trip up to San Francisco to catch a football game between the Eagles and the Niners.  As the lone girl, there was never any question whether Jamie could hang on this tailgating weekend.  She pounded road sodas on the ride up with Tony, chowed down on slices and got a free t-shirt at "Pizza My Heart", experimented with JOOSE for the first time, joined us in tricking the Duke into thinking 95 might be dead, and led the way as we galavanted from guestroom to guestroom playing Strange-Room-O-Mite with a maid's keycard that was serendipitously left in our hotel room.  The fact that we had access to every room at a hotel still boggles my mind.  When we were finally discovered by a group of weary travelers, just looking to settle in for the night in the room they were assigned, we feigned ignorance.  "Aw man", we said, "The front desk checked us both into this room?"  The group responded, "Yeah, it's weird.  This is the third time they've put us in a room where it seems someone is already staying."  We offered consolation, "Well, you guys keep this room.  We'll go sort it out."  And then we dashed away.

There have been a mess of times, but also a great deal of sweet, wholesome fun.  I loved having Jamie as a roommate.  We put a punch clock in our bathroom, we built a bar, and we realistically considered building a train set that ran throughout all of our kitchen cupboards.  When there were only two of us, we sat on the beach and decided that we were going to keep 8644 alive and awesome.  When we finally closed down the old homestead, we sent her off with a final game of dynamite.
